How much has Latinx media outlets progressed? How big is the representation?
Eugenio Derbez, a Mexican actor, comedian, and filmmaker, recently streamed a video that spoke to the Latinx community. Derbez appeared in a dish Latino commercial that was highly emotional, and many Latinxs reacted to the commercial. Dish Latino is a Spanish American television provider network. Eugenio is watching a TV show known as El Chavo del Ocho in the commercial. El Chavo del Ocho is a Mexican tv show that many Latinx grew up watching; this show marks a terrific identity for Latinxs because of how relatable the show was to actual life circumstances. In the commercial, the main character of el Chavo del Ocho jumps out of the TV and has an entire nostalgic conversation with Eugenio. The main character asks Eugenio if he still watches him, just like in the old times. Eugenio answers, "yes, like always." The main character starts talking about how much technology has changed and how the Latinx media outlets have expanded; he was trying to emphasize that progress is being made in the media industry for "our people." Eugenio confirms that we have made a massive step in the industry; he also states, "Us Latinx people have made it super far now." The main character is fascinated to hear all these accomplishments, and then Eugenio smiles and states, "Yes, we have come this far, and all thanks to those who took the first steps, like you." The main character points back and says, "Like you as well." Since both figures have made a significant impact in the media industry for Latinxs, everyone was very emotional when this commercial was streamed. What made it more important was that this commercial honored the main character of el Chavo del Ocho since, unfortunately, he is deceased.
Check out the commercial It is in Spanish but English subtitles are available:
Great strides have been made in the media industry regarding the Latinx community! Not only have more outlets that celebrate latinx culture surfaced, but also big players like Disney are bringing more recognition to the community and the importance and beauty of the culture. It's a great thing to see and celebrate.
ReplyDeleteI saw that ad and it made me very emotional which was a reaction that I can not expected. I think that the Latinx community has made great strides and I hope that representation will grow in the non-stereotypical way. I listened to the an interview by Salma Hayek about being a hispanic women now in the Marvel universe and you could defiantly tell that people are noticing more of the great advances. This is a great blog post!
