Connection between Immigrants, Politics, and Mass Media

  The Free Press News Voices partnered up with individuals from the Latinx community to start a project about a bigger Latinx local news future. The main idea of this project was to build on a bigger news platform that Latinx could identify with. Diamond Hardiman wrote an article and spoke about this subject. Latinx have been dealing with severe racist media problems. There are many barriers between mass media and Latinx communities. This project was created in hopes of destroying these barriers and a call for better representation towards Latinxs. Hardiman states that powerful media outlets make it complicated for Latinxs to expand their horizons in the media industry. Many ideas were brainstormed to fix this issue.  Different news outlets distribute news around the world. For example, here in the United States, some of the most known news channels are Foxnews, CNN, and the NYT. Some Latinx individuals do not speak English, so, likely, they aren't involved with English news outlets. So, where do Spanish-speaking individuals get their news from? Many channels, podcasts, and digital sources distribute information in Spanish. Some of these sources are Telemundo, Univision, Remezcla, CNN en espanol and many more. These sites allow individuals to connect with the world by providing different resources through their sites.   February 14 is a significant commercial day that I am sure many celebrate because Valentine’s Day is celebrated. Tons of sales come from items relating to valentine’s day. As we might know, many buy candy, stuffed animals, flowers, arrangements, and restaurant sales are also high. Latinx individuals believe that many of these sales come from the immigrant community. Many if not all social media content creators have united to the hashtag #adaywithoutanimmigrant. This hashtag was created by immigrants and Latinx people to grab the attention of many to ask for a change. People are posting and making videos talking about the subject. The plan is to not consume anything on February 14 so that the government can see how much the immigrant and Latinx community contributes to this country.   Joaquin Castro, a Texas U.S representative, spoke about the lack of representation Latinos have in the media industry. There is a low representation of Latino actors in the United States. Besides getting excluded, Latinos are immensely stereotyped in the industry. This is unfair, and people are getting mad about it. Many journalists have spoken about Hispanic reporters not being represented or able to attend significant media events. Los Angeles Times made a public apology for not hiring journalists of color. More individuals from the Latino community have been uniting to make this problem known. Through this journey, a media outlet hired Gustavo Arellano, a Mexican American writer.
